A skilled artisan does the work – it’s not “farmed out” to large
workrooms as many designers do.
Linings, interlinings, invisible zippers, finished inside seams are
used appropriately to provide long-lasting quality. |

What
can you expect to pay for artisan-quality custom fabrication?
You
can expect a firm estimate only after evaluating and measuring your
desired furnishings, but the following examples may help to give you an
idea. Custom work is more
expensive, and better quality, than is available ready-made.
|
|
- Custom
slipcovers cost about as much as upholstery (but they have the
advantage of being removable). They
should fit like a glove, with fabric patterns beautifully placed and
matched, and you’ll say, “I can’t believe that’s a
slipcover!” For
example, a wing chair with a seat cushion and no skirt is $300 plus
the fabric. Quality
slipcover-suitable fabric starts at $20 a yard (and up), and a wing
chair takes about 8 yards of fabric.
So you should expect to pay about $500 for this hypothetical
slipcovered wing chair.
|
|
|
- Upscale
and high-end custom bedcoverings are priced, not by the size of the
bed as in ready-made, but by the complexity of the design.
Differences between bed sizes affect the amount of fabric
required. For example, a
plain, invisibly-zippered duvet cover costs $150 plus fabric, a
tailored spread with attached plain sides and kick pleats is $300 plus
fabric. Cording,
gathering, pleating, ruching, smocking and decorative trims like
fringe or buttons add reasonably to these base prices and usually add
significantly to the beauty and personality of the design.
|
 |
|
- Decorative
paint finishes on a wall are priced by the square foot, and basic
finishes are roughly comparable to having wallpaper installed. Wall
finishing prices start at $2.50 per square foot, and go up from there
depending on the type of finish and difficulty of the selected design.
As
with all custom work, price estimates are only firm after evaluating and
measuring your project.
